Application
 
Thermal decomposition and temperature reduction
Magnesium hydroxide undergoes a decomposition reaction when heated, absorbing a large amount of heat. This process helps to reduce the surface temperature of the material, thus slowing down the combustion process. Its decomposition temperature ranges from 340-490°C, making it suitable for polymers processed at high temperatures.
 

Release of water and dilution of oxygen

During decomposition, magnesium hydroxide releases bound water. This water further absorbs heat and dilutes the oxygen concentration, helping to inhibit flame spread. Water vapor covering the surface of the material also reduces the oxygen concentration in the air at the burning surface, thus impeding combustion.

Generation of high temperature resistant magnesium oxide protective layer

 

Magnesium oxide (MgO) produced by the decomposition of magnesium hydroxide has excellent refractory properties. Magnesium oxide is able to cover the surface of the material, forming a protective wall that insulates oxygen and combustibles, thus effectively preventing the spread of combustion. This protective layer also promotes charring of the polymer material, forming a charred layer to block heat and air entry.

 

Smoke suppression and toxicity reduction

Magnesium hydroxide significantly reduces the production of smoke during the flame retardant process, which is critical to the problem of low visibility and inhalation of toxic fumes during fires. In addition, acidic gases (e.g., sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, etc.) produced during combustion can be neutralized by magnesium hydroxide, reducing the hazards of these toxic substances.
