Application

Microcrystalline glass, with the dual advantages of glass and ceramics, surpasses ceramics in brightness and is tougher than ordinary glass. In order to further enhance the performance of this high quality material, we usually add high purity magnesium oxide to the glaze or microcrystalline glass.

 

Increase the melting temperature of glaze and microcrystalline glass

Magnesium oxide also raises the initial melting temperature of glazes and microcrystalline glasses and significantly reduces their melting temperature at high temperatures. This effect is particularly important in the glassmaking process, where it helps us to better control the molten state of the material within a specific temperature range. However, similar to the viscosity change mentioned earlier, this effect of lowering the melting temperature diminishes as the amount of magnesium oxide added increases, and the melting temperature rises above a certain amount.

 

Reduced coefficient of thermal expansion

Magnesium oxide also reduces the coefficient of thermal expansion, albeit by a relatively small amount, which should not be overlooked in the pursuit of high-precision glass products. What's more, magnesium oxide can substantially increase the surface tension of glaze and microcrystalline glass, a property that makes it stand out among many other elements, providing better surface properties and stability for glass products.
